If you are hiring a salaried helper or caregiver in your home for the first time, the adaptation process can be anxiety-inducing for both you and your child/patient. You must make some preparations to get through this process healthily.
Orientation (Familiarization) Process
Do not leave your caregiver alone and go to work on their first day. Stay at home for the first few days (1 week if possible) and practically show them the daily routines of the child or patient (sleep times, portion sizes, favorite games). This process is golden for the caregiver to learn your house rules.
Using Indoor Cameras
It is your most natural right to use a camera system at home for security purposes. However, legally and ethically, you must inform the caregiver about this situation during the job interview stage. Using hidden cameras shatters trust; being transparent ensures the business relationship proceeds with respect.
Prepare a Written List of Rules
Facilitate communication by hanging emergency numbers, foods causing allergies, and general house rules (e.g., "The TV is only turned on for 1 hour in the evening") on the refrigerator.
