Newborn babies' nails are very soft but equally sharp. Regular nail care is essential to prevent them from scratching their faces during involuntary hand movements.
The Right Time and Equipment
The best time to cut nails is when your baby is in a deep sleep or right after a bath (water softens the nails).
- Always use special round-tipped baby nail clippers or a baby nail file.
- Cut fingernails in an oval shape, and toenails straight across to prevent ingrown nails.
Things to Consider
If there is accidental minor bleeding on the skin, do not panic. Apply gentle pressure with a sterile cotton ball and wait for it to stop. Never apply a bandage, as the baby could put their finger in their mouth and choke on it.
