Although our home is our safest refuge, statistics show that a large portion of accidents occur in the home environment. Especially if there is a small child or an elderly person at home, it is of vital importance for every parent and caregiver to know the basic first aid rules.
Common Accidents and Intervention Methods
- Choking Hazard: If you see a child or adult unable to breathe and turning purple, you must immediately apply the Heimlich Maneuver. For babies, lay them face down on your arm and use the back blow technique.
- Burns: Never let the area exposed to hot water or oil come into contact with ice, yogurt, or toothpaste. Simply hold the burned area under gently running cool water for 10-15 minutes.
- Falls and Bumps: Apply an ice pack wrapped in a clean cloth to prevent swelling. If the victim is vomiting or drowsy, go to the emergency room without delay.
Make sure to keep an updated first aid kit in your home containing bandages, band-aids, antiseptic solution, and sterile gloves.
