The initial interview with caregiver candidates is a critical stage in choosing the right person. Instead of classic questions, scenario-based questions that measure the candidate's vision and problem-solving ability should be preferred.
Key Questions to Ask in the Interview
- Why did you leave your previous jobs? (Shows the candidate's honesty and attitude towards former employers).
- How do you react when a child has a tantrum (or an elderly patient has a fit of anger)?
- What are the first 3 steps you would take in a medical emergency (falling, choking hazard)?
- How is your smartphone usage and social media habits during working hours?
- Can you show flexibility when an urgent household chore outside your job description comes up?
- Do you have experience in cooking or preparing special diet menus?
Pay Attention to Body Language
When answering your questions, be sure to pay attention to whether the candidate makes eye contact, their posture, and the compassion in their tone of voice. Even if they are nervous, giving honest answers is the most valuable criterion.
